Bikram Yoga

Bikram yoga is a relatively recently introduced form of yoga which consists of two pranayamas (breathing exercises) and twenty-six asanas (postures) and which is appropriate for all ages and levels of experience - even a veteran practitioner can find it challenging.

A typical class will last about an hour and a half and the whole class is held in a room which is heated to around 40C. This warmth allows the muscles to relax and loosen up (thus aiding the prevention of strain) and also promotes blood circulation and cleansing through the sweat glands.

Like other forms of yoga, Bikram Yoga aims to increase balance, flexibility, focus and strength.

Ideally Bikram Yoga should be practiced daily at the onset in order to build up the body's strength and resistance to change. Once this state has been attained, it is possible to reduce the frequency of attendance to alternate days and this will maintain the fitness level achieved during the initial strength building period.

Bikram Yoga can help with the following:
  • Body toning
  • Concentration skills
  • Energy gain
  • Fat reduction
  • Flexibility increase
  • Health and vitality
  • Strength build-up
  • Weight loss
That is the basic premise of Bikram Yoga.
